Motor Carrier Authority Help

Starting or expanding a trucking operation involves several related registrations. We help you understand which ones apply and connect you with an independent provider to handle the filings.

USDOT number vs. operating authority

A USDOT number identifies a carrier for safety and compliance purposes. Operating authority (often referred to by its MC number) is separate permission needed by many for-hire interstate carriers and brokers. Some operations need only a USDOT number; others need both. Which applies depends on what you haul, where, and for whom.

Who typically needs help

  • New owner-operators getting their own authority.
  • Intrastate carriers expanding into interstate work.
  • Private carriers moving into for-hire operations.
  • Carriers with inactive, outdated, or incorrect registration records.

Typical steps and related filings

  • Apply for a USDOT number and, where required, operating authority.
  • File a BOC-3 process agent designation.
  • Have required insurance filed by your insurer.
  • Register for UCR if applicable, and set up IFTA and IRP if you run qualified vehicles interstate.
  • Keep records current with required periodic updates.

What information to have ready

  • Business legal name, entity type, and EIN or other tax ID.
  • Principal place of business and contact details.
  • Type of operation, cargo, and number of vehicles and drivers.
  • Insurance agent or carrier contact.

Common delays

  • Insurance or BOC-3 filings not completed, so authority can't become active.
  • Mismatched business names or addresses across filings.
  • Choosing the wrong operation type or cargo classification.
